Disposable world

At church on Sunday the pastor made a quick remark that stuck with me. He reminded us of what a disposable world we live in. While he was talking about relationships my mind spiraled out from there. Of course there is the obscene amount of garbage we create and dispose of in landfills. Cardboard and plastic metal and foods, we throw it all away. Most of us don’t even pause to think about our effect on the earth. Now before you roll your eyes and remove me from my wee soapbox, take a moment and think. Have you ever picked up a cardboard snack box to find it is also encapsulated by plastic? Once you remove that plastic wrapper and open the aforementioned cardboard suddenly another plastic contraption bars your way!! Snacks should not require such effort. What do we get for all our efforts? A snack that can ship across the world, sit on a grocery shelf before coming home to sit in your house until you finally wrench it open. When did we become ok with eating food that has the capability of staying “fresh” indefinitely?

But I digress.

Our pastor was talking about disposables, which struck deeply with me on so many levels. Our garbage, our food sources and as he mentioned; relationships. We dispose of so many things without thought even our relationships. In our world almost everything can be replaced, except time. Time with loved ones, time to do the right thing and time to change our impact on our world. Lets start with those closest to us, and try not to treat them as if they are disposable. No one is.
